Li Hu emphasized that the joint establishment of the college represents a concrete step to implement President Xi Jinping’s directive to “advance China’s seed industry”. It is also a critical measure to strengthen the biosecurity defense of the Hainan Free Trade Port and boost the revitalization of the seed industry. The new college will advance the in-depth integration between higher education and scientific research institutions, break down institutional barriers, align resources with regional development needs, and support the construction of Hainan as a global hub for the introduction and transshipment of animal and plant germplasm resources.

Li Hu further stated that HNU will continue to focus on the development of animal science and veterinary medicine disciplines, striving to cultivate interdisciplinary and innovative talent who meets the three major international veterinary certification standards. The university will form cross-institutional research teams centering on tropical disease prevention and control and germplasm resource innovation, channeling research forces to the frontline of the industry. Through shared resources and co-built platforms, the college will become a high-level innovation highland integrating basic research, applied development, and achievement transformation, providing strong support for the high-quality development of industries in the Hainan Free Trade Port.

Cao Bing noted that the two major scientific research and teaching platforms – the College of Animal Science and Veterinary Medicine jointly established by HNU and HAAS, and the Huang Lusheng Academician Workstation of Hainan Province – are the first projects to be officially signed and moved into the upcoming National Tropical Agricultural Science and Technology Achievement Transfer and Transformation Center and the National Pig Germplasm and Model Preservation and Breeding Base undertaken by HAAS. By leveraging complementary advantages, the two sides aim to build the college on the foundation of major platforms for Hainan pig breeding, conservation of Wuzhishan pig resources, and the use of medical model animals, achieving high-level integration and mutually beneficial collaboration.
