HNU Hosts 52nd Session of Distinguished Scientist Lecture

On the morning of December 5, the 52nd Distinguished Scientist Lecture was held at the auditorium of the Social Sciences Complex, Hainan University. Yu Jinzhong, research fellow of Institute of Semiconductors and professor of Chinese Academy of Sciences, gave a lecture with the title of Garry Forward Spirit of Scientists and Strive to Be Pioneers of the New Era. In attendance were Xu Wei, member of the Party Leadership Group and Vice President of the Hainan Association for Science and Technology, and HNU’s Vice President Li Buhong, who chaired the event.

Starting with Qian Xuesen’s question (How to foster innovative talent), Yu Jinzhong expounded on scientists’ noble virtues of patriotism, dedication, perseverance, innovation and modesty with stories of Qian Xuesen, Li Zhengdao, Yan Jici, Hua Luogeng, Huang Kun, Wang Shouwu, and other eminent scientists. Yu noted that young students should set lofty ideals, remain down-to-earth, and fear no difficulties. To create knowledge, one must strive for excellence in scientific research, be adept at identifying and raising questions—particularly those of genuine scientific significance; one should excel at proposing models or methods to solve problems—merely raising issues without resolving them renders the effort practically meaningless, and one must excel at drawing the most critical and meaningful conclusions.

Professor Yu shared his personal academic journey, along with insights and reflections on pursuing a career in scientific research. He emphasized that the HNUers gain a clearer vision for their research trajectories and deepen their comprehension of the spirit of scientists to draw inspiration, making greater contribution to the advancement of both their alma mater and the nation.

The lecture hall was at full capacity. Vibrant exchanges ensued on topics ranging from launching postgraduate research to integrating the essence of scientists’ spirit with practical work, followed by Yu Jinzhong’s insightful responses to questions from the audience.

Officials from the Hainan Association for Science and Technology, delegates from professional societies, as well as representatives of enterprise and university science and technology associations joined the lecture in a hybrid format. On site and online were also over 600 faculty members and students from HNU’s four campuses— Haidian, Danzhou, Mission Hills (including the Chengxi site) and Yazhou Bay.
