According to the “2025 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU)” released on August 15th by ShanghaiRanking, a globally leading organization on higher education intelligence, Hainan University (HNU) remains among the world’s top 500. This represents a rise of 414 places compared with its 2022 ranking. A total of 222 universities from Chinese mainland are listed in the top 1000.
HNU delivers outstanding performance in various indicators, especially in the number of articles indexed in the Web of Science, ranking 217th worldwide and 76th nationwide, showing significant improvement over previous years.
It is reported that the ARWU was first published in 2003 as the world’s first comprehensive ranking for the world universities. This year, ARWU uses six objective indicators to rank world universities, including the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, number of highly cited researchers selected by Clarivate, number of articles published in journals of Nature and Science, number of articles indexed in Science Citation Index Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index in the Web of Science, and per capita performance of a university. More than 2500 universities are actually ranked by ARWU every year and the best 1000 are published.
