Hainan Daily| Liu Xiaoming, Governor of Hainan Province visits Hainan University

On August 15, Liu Xiaoming, Governor of Hainan province, visited Hainan University (HNU) and presided over a symposium.

Liu Xiaoming visited the laboratory of the New Energy Optoelectronic Materials and Devices team, the exhibition hall of the Collaborative Innovation Centers, and the Center for Pico-electronics Microscopy, to learn about laboratory construction and operation, as well as the transformation of scientific and technological achievements. Additionally, he inspected the dining hall using the “Four No’s and Two Directs” approach— no notices, no advance alerts, no scripted reports, no formal receptions, but going directly to the grassroots and conducting research on-site. He stressed the need to carry out patriotic health campaigns, strengthen food safety management and continuously improve the dietary standards for both faculty and students.

During the symposium, Liu Xiaoming highlighted the importance of following General Secretary Xi Jinping’s guidance to develop world-class disciplines, clarify the university’s position, leverage its strengths, and advance the “Double First-Class” initiative (World-class universities and academic disciplines). He noted that these efforts will help Hainan foster talents, drive technological innovation, and contribution to the construction of the Hainan Free Trade Port (FTP).He emphasized that HNU should strive for excellence by benchmarking against top-tier standards and comprehensively enhance the university’s core competitiveness to better serve the development of FTP. It’s important to foster virtue and place high value on ideological and political education to cultivate more future-oriented, high-caliber, internationally-competent and innovative talents.HNU needs to advance the integrated development of education, science, technology and talent. Guided by the development philosophy of “seeking platform-driven growth, excelling with special characteristics, forging high-level academic partnerships, and opening up and making innovations”, HNU will yield more groundbreaking achievements, deepen industry-academia-research collaboration and facilitate the transformation of innovative outcomes from “book shelves” to “market shelves”.HNU should  align its discipline development more closely with societal needs. It needs to enhance existing leading disciplines, develop interdisciplinary and frontier fields, improve the dynamic adjustment mechanism and build several internationally influential academic programs, achieving “distinctive and high-level” discipline development. In this way, its talent supply can meet the industrial development needs.Through recruitment and development of talents and subsequent reinforcement of professional integrity, HNU can speed up the building of a high-caliber teaching faculty for the new era. At the same time, HNU needs to focus on Hainan’s modern industrial system by strengthening its talent cultivation, accelerating the transformation of scientific and technological achievements and enhancing the capacity to support local development. Moreover, HNU should also attach great importance to international exchange and establish high-level multilateral cooperative mechanisms to enhance its academic voice internationally. It is imperative to enhance integrity and accountability and accurately align with the Party’s educational policies. Furthermore, HNU needs to strengthen its leadership by improving governance, establishing standardized systems, modernize the institutional framework to achieve high-quality development.

Vice Governor Xie Jing, Vice Chairman of the Provincial Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) HNU President Luo Qingming, and Provincial Government Secretary-General Fu Xuanchao also joined the visit.
