Brent White, Chief Global Officer of the University of Hawaii at Manoa (UHM), led a delegation to Hainan University (HNU) on October 18 and held talks with HNU President Luo Qingming, also a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).

During the meeting, Luo introduced HNU and highlighted its commitment to an open education strategy, which highlights cooperation with BRI countries and features partnerships with tropical countries and regions. He expressed hope that two sides would strengthen ties and leverage respective strengths in teaching and research to launch more substantial collaborative programs.
Brent White cited many similarities between Hainan and Hawaii in terms of the climate, environment, and culture, which provide a solid foundation for collaboration. He expressed interest in deepening joint education programs, collaborative research, and faculty and student exchange in the areas such as food science to achieve win-win outcomes.
Following the meeting, HNU and the UHM signed a Memorandum of Understanding to formalize their partnership. Besides, the UHM delegation toured the HNU History Museum, the National Key Laboratory of Food Science and Engineering, and the MOE’s Engineering Research Center for Tropical Polysaccharide Resources Utilization, as well as the Mission Hills campus.
The attendees included senior UHM officials, Vice President Gao Diangong, and representatives of relevant departments.
