HNU Holds 4th Luminary Lecture in Humanities & Social Sciences

On the afternoon of September 3, Hainan University (HNU) held the 4th Luminary Lecture in Humanities & Social Sciences in the auditorium of the Tin Ka Ping Building. Qu Jianwu, a professor from the School of Marxism at Dalian Maritime University and an awardee of the “Role Model of the Times” title, delivered a keynote speech “Striving for Excellence as the Youth in the New Era.” HNU leaders Han Shumei and Tan Yong were present and Gao Diangong presided over the event.

Based on his 40-plus years of teaching and working experience as a university counsellor, Prof. Qu offered suggestions from eight key aspects: love for the country, loyalty to the Communist Party of China, commitment to ideals, dedication to learning, development of a resilient character, cultivation of moral integrity, compliance with laws, and maintenance of physical fitness. These principles, he said, are essential for students to grow and succeed.

With the examples of outstanding CPC members, Qu called on students to serve the people with knowledge and skills, contribute to national development through innovation, and study with the aim of promoting China’s prosperity. He shared stories of his own students, encouraging the graduating students of HNU to seek opportunities where they are needed most. Qu hoped that the young students remain steadfast in their commitment to national rejuvenation and strive to excel in their prime.

He emphasized that although the role of a university counsellor might seem ordinary, it is consequential and invaluable. He described it as a noble lifelong career, one that requires the counsellor should first be a person of virtue and then stay committed to instilling good values in students and helping them thrive academically and become contributing members of society.

The attentive audience reflected deeply on Prof. Qu’s insightful speech. Many participated in a lively Q&A session and Qu gave detailed answers.
