Hainan University Launches Tropical Food Technology Cooperation Center in Partnership with CFSA

On the morning of October 10, Hainan University inaugurated the Tropical Food Technology Cooperation Center, an exciting collaboration with the China National Center for Food Safety Risk Assessment (CFSA). The launch ceremony and workshop were attended by top leaders from the CFSA, the Hainan Provincial Health Commission, and Hainan University.

Dr. Li Ning, Director General of the CFSA, acknowledged recent achievements made by Hainan University and its School of Food Science and Engineering. She underscored that food security is essential to public welfare and directly impacts people’s lives and health.

She urged the Center to harness the policies and resources of the Hainan Free Trade Port to strengthen collaboration among the CFSA, the Hainan Provincial Health Commission, and Hainan University in setting food standards, cultivating professional talent, and advancing research, with the goal of accelerating the market-led industrialization of tropical specialty foods.

Li Wenxiu, Director of the Hainan Provincial Health Commission, thanked Hainan University for its long-standing support. He pointed out that with Hainan set to begin independent customs operations on December 18 this year, food safety and nutritional health will be high on the provincial agenda. He called on the Center to adopt problem-, goal-, and demand-driven approaches to help safeguard food safety, pledging the Commission’s continued strong technical support.

Li Hu, Chairman of the HNU Council, stated that this tripartite collaboration represents not only a concrete response to the national food safety strategy and the development of the Hainan Free Trade Port, but also an innovative model for leveraging complementary strengths and pooling resources.

He expressed confidence that this synergy would further stimulate talent development, technological breakthroughs, and technology transfer in food safety for Hainan and the entire nation.

Zhang Jiachao, Dean of the School of Food Science and Engineering at Hainan University; He Bin, Deputy Director of the Hainan Provincial Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Hainan CDC); and Man Bingbing, Deputy Director General of the CFSA shared their perspectives on the Center’s development.

In discussions on tropical food safety and Hainan specialty food industrialization, the food safety team lead presented their research on tropical agricultural products and food safety. The food nutrition team lead introduced the key technologies for efficient utilization of food-derived bioactive peptides and their industrial application. The advanced food manufacturing team lead detailed team development progress.  

The launch event was chaired by Prof. Chen Jun, Vice President of HNU, and attended by heads of relevant units and departments from the CFSA, the Hainan Provincial Health Commission, the Hainan CDC, and Hainan University.
