On October 15, the 45th HNU Distinguished Scientist Lecture was held at the auditorium of the Social Sciences Complex. Prof. Wang Enge, a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), delivered a keynote lecture titled “Full Quantum Effects in Condensed Hydrogen System--Beyond the Born-Oppenheimer Approximation.” In attendance were Xu Wei, Vice Chairman of the Hainan Association for Science and Technology; HNU President Luo Qingming, also Member of CAS; and other HNU leaders, including Gao Diangong, Qiu Xiguang, Chen Jun, and Nie Zongxiu. President Luo Qingming presided over the event.

Prof. Wang began with the Schrödinger equation for condensed matter physics and its crucial application, the Born-Oppenheimer approximation (BOA). He explained the problem of BOA when nuclear quantum effects and non-adiabatic effects occur. Professor Wang then introduced the concept of full quantum effects, demonstrated its theoretical and empirical studies, and illustrated it with various cases. Using the hydrogen bond network of the complex system of water as a primary example, he elaborated on the diverse physical phenomena arising from full quantum effects, shared the latest research findings from his team in this field, and outlined the problems and challenges anticipated in future research.

The lecture drew a large audience of faculty and students, who actively engaged in discussions on the topics presented. Prof. Wang answered the questions from the audience with professionalism and patience.

The lecture was attended by participants both online and offline. Among them were leadership from the Hainan Association for Science and Technology, heads from relevant HNU schools and departments, and over 700 faculty and students from all HNU campuses. These include Haidian, Danzhou, Guanlanhu (which also oversees the Chengxi Teaching Site), and Yazhou Bay campuses.
