In his keynote address titled “Confidence at the Forefront of Free Trade: Sailing Towards New Horizons in Research”, President Luo praised the Class of 2025 for their academic spirit and innovative mindset. He emphasized that these graduates are not only deeply engaged in frontier research but also courageous in challenging established theories. They demonstrate perseverance akin to “sitting on a cold bench for ten years” while also embracing the boldness to innovate from scratch. He commended their ability to raise profound questions through independent research and achieve breakthroughs through teamwork.
President Luo expressed heartfelt congratulations to the graduates, encouraging them to keep national priorities in mind, stay confident, and remain steadfast amid the tides of change; to embrace openness through mutual learning and global engagement; and to hone their skills, pursue innovation, and embrace the future.

Hainan University attaches great importance to postgraduate education, and in recent years it has made continuous improvements to its training system. In 2025, the university enrolled 3,902 new master’s students and received quotas for 780 doctoral students. Through distinctive programs such as the “Science and Technology Backyard” (a rural innovation program where researchers and students reside in farm households to conduct applied agricultural research and support local development), “Hainan Special Program” (a state-backed talent program supporting key research in Hainan Free Trade Port) and the “Dual-One Plan” (a targeted rural revitalization training initiative that assigns one graduate student to each township to bridge the ‘last mile’ of rural science outreach and the ‘first mile’ of agricultural product distribution), HNU continues to deepen reform in postgraduate education.
To date, the university has established 11 Science and Technology Backyards supported by the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, and the China Association for Science and Technology; 61 Backyards with the China Agricultural Technology Association; and 97 Hainan-based Backyards.
From 2022 to 2024, 45 individuals were honored as “Outstanding Graduate Supervisors of Hainan Province”, and 24 teams received the provincial award for “Outstanding Graduate Supervisor Teams”.
