The 37th Distinguished Scientist Lecture was held at the auditorium of the Social Sciences Complex on the afternoon of March 7. Prof. Gui Weihua, a member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), recipient of the national honorary titles of “Outstanding Sci-Tech Worker” and “Role Model for Imparting Knowledge and Educating People”, delivered a keynote speech titled “Large-scale AI Models and Their Industrial Applications.” Fu Xuanguo, Secretary of CPC HNU Committee and other senior HNU leaders were in attendance. Vice President Li Buhong chaired the event.

With the Turing Test as a lead-in, Gui introduced the evolution of artificial intelligence (AI) technology, providing a systematic analysis of the core principles, key technological breakthroughs, and future trends of large-scale AI models. Drawing on his team’s research in metallurgy and manufacturing, he elaborated on the industrial applications of large-scale AI models, exploring their prospects, implementation strategies, and relevant challenges.

Gui emphasized that manufacturing industry is the backbone of China’s economy, and AI is the critical driver of new industrialization. He underscored the importance of fostering deeper collaboration between academia and industry, promoting open-source innovation, and defining the boundaries and responsibilities of technological advancement to achieve high-level intelligent solutions.

The lecture attracted a packed audience. In the Q&A session, Gui offered detailed answers regarding the future of the industrial application of large-scale AI models and shared his unique insights.

More than 300 people attended the event, including representatives from Hainan Association for Science and Technology, and other associations, heads of HNU’s departments concerned, as well as HNU faculty and student representatives.
