In alignment with China’s strategic priorities and the Hainan Free Trade Port (FTP) Initiative, Hainan University (HNU) has been optimizing its undergraduate enrollment plan and high-caliber talent strategy. Based on the existing resources and development trends in the following five years, the undergraduate intake increased from 8,200 to 9,000 students in 2024 — an addition of 800 students. In 2025, the number will grow by another 100, reaching 9,100.
This expansion is a strategic move to address national priorities, with a particular focus on serving the Hainan FTP. The increased enrollment is fully allocated to science and engineering programs, with an emphasis on disciplines such as Computer Science, Information Technology, Cybersecurity, Materials Science, and Marine Sciences.
In recent years, HNU has implemented major education reforms relating to Complete Credit System, Collaborative Innovation Center and Residential College in an effort to enhance the quality and scale of undergraduate education. To dovetail its programs with industry needs, HNU has launched interdisciplinary programs tailored to emerging technologies and industries. In 2024, four new undergraduate programs—Big Data Management and Application, Biological Breeding Science, International Law, and International Journalism & Communication —were launched, and meanwhile outdated programs were phased out to advance the nurturing of versatile and highly-skilled talent.
Going forward, HNU will stay committed to national strategies and the Hainan FTP Initiative. Leveraging Hainan’s unique geographic and resource advantages, it will further improve discipline layout, deepen educational reforms, and enhance talent nurturing to establish itself as a globally prestigious university. With these endeavors, HNU aims to make greater contributions to the economic and social development regionally and nationally.
