With Hainan’s environmental features as the lead-in, Jiang Guibin introduced the concept of Emerging Contaminant, explaining its definition, types, and differences from the traditional contaminant. He delved into key properties such as molecular mobility, transformation, and toxicity, emphasizing the intricate connection between environmental pollution and public health. Jiang also outlined comprehensive strategies for contaminant management, including source control, process regulation, and end-of-pipe treatment.

Jiang highlighted that managing emerging contaminants is a long-term, dynamic and complex undertaking that requires systematic research and regulation. He called for the establishment of a revamped methodological framework, attention to pollutant migration patterns, the development of safer substitutes, and stricter source controls, particularly in highly industrialized and densely populated areas. Besides, he underscored the need for intensified technological innovations to enhance contaminant treatment and disposal capabilities.
