From 15th to 20th in July, a HNU delegation led by Vice President Gao Diangong and Publicity Department Director Han Shumei visited Brunei and Indonesia.
In line with the guidelines of President Xi Jinping’s important speech on April 13th, 2018, this visit aimed to promote the development of HNU into a comprehensive, research-oriented, and internationalized “Double First-Class” university through expanding “Bring In” and “Go Global” educational exchanges. The visit sought to deepen educational cooperation with local universities, invite them to join the League of Tropical Universities (LTU), and consolidate partnerships with local community organizations, thereby advancing HNU’s internationalization.
During their stay in Brunei, Gao met with Joyce Teo Siew Yean, Vice President of Universiti Brunei Darussalam, and Dayang Hajah Zohrah Haji Sulaiman, President of Universiti Teknologi Brunei. Their talks centered on joint talent training, faculty and student exchange, and collaborative research. The delegation also invited these universities to become LTU members. HNU formally established cooperative relationship with them through signing the related MoUs.

In Indonesia, Gao met with Ir. Muhamad Abduh, M.T., Vice Rector of the Bandung Institute of Technology, and Ir. Ngakan Putu Gede Suardana, Rector of Udayana University. They reached consensus on strengthening cooperation and signed the relevant agreements and MoUs. The delegation also met with Ms. Li Xiaoya, Principal of the local Confucius School, and signed the Service Agreement on Recruiting International Students for Hainan University. Additionally, the delegation had in-depth discussions with Kepada Yth. Dr. KN. BoyJayawibawa, M.Si, Head of the Bali Provincial Department of Education, on developing scholarship and student exchange programs between the two countries. Later, they paid a visit to Michael Tuori, Academic Director of Tsinghua Southeast Asia Center, to learn from Tsinghua’s experience in running education programs abroad.

During the visit, the delegation also met with leaders and representatives of local Chinese communities, including Chairman of the Hainan Association Kuala Belait of Brunei Darussalam, President of the Perhimpunan Hainan Indonesia, and President of the Hainanese Association of Bali. Their interactions focused on expanding international student recruitment and organizing short-term training programs that feature Chinese culture or the Hainan Free Trade Port.

HNU has attached great importance to educational cooperation and exchanges with the universities, training centers, and Chinese communities in Brunei and Indonesia. For the next stage, HNU will implement the MoUs signed during this visit, which includes advancing the construction of the LTU, fostering deeper cooperation between HNU and the LTU members and leveraging the resources and influence of the Hainanese in Southeast Asia to boost HNU’s profile among local Chinese communities.
The HNU delegation also included representatives from the Office of International Cooperation and Exchange (School of International Education,Office of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Affairs), Office of External Relations and Alumni Affairs (Center for Overseas Hainanese Friendship), School of Tropical Agriculture and Forestry, and School of Pharmaceutical Sciences.
