On August 23, the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) announced the results of the 2024 grant application review. Hainan University (HNU) secured the funding for a total of 266 research projects, marking a new high.
In terms of success rate, HNU reaches 20.27%, about 7% higher than the national average. As for the category, the proportion of general projects and young scholars’ projects see a further increase respectively. It is noteworthy that HNU has achieved the funding for another key international (regional) collaborative research project within five years and two projects under the Excellent Young Scientists Fund, setting new milestones.
Over the past five years, HNU has witnessed a significant surge in the number of approved NSFC-funded projects. Compared with 2020, an additional 164 are secured in 2024, increasing by 160.78%.
The NSFC plays a crucial role in supporting high-level basic research in China. Securing these grants is of great importance to HNU as it seeks to spur research innovation, enhances capabilities in fundamental research and original innovation, and attracts high-caliber professionals in innovative research. Additionally, these grants contribute to the development and growth of HNU’s academic disciplines. During the 2024 timeframe for centralized grant application, the NSFC received a total of 383,126 submissions. To date, 49,780 research projects have been officially approved, representing an average success rate of 13%. Other categories of applications submitted during this period are still under review or awaiting approval.
