On the afternoon of May 18, a seminar on the High-Quality Development of HNU’s Marxist Theory Discipline was held at International Academic Exchange Center in Haidian campus. A panel of five experts and scholars from Renmin University of China, Sun Yat-sen University, Beijing Normal University, Nankai University, and Wuhan University were invited to contribute their ideas to and suggestions for the development of the Marxist theory discipline of HNU. Fu Xuanguo, Chairman of the HNU Council, and Li Buhong, Vice President of HNU, attended the seminar. The seminar was chaired by Li Buhong.

Fu Xuanguo said that Hainan University, under General Secretary Xi Jinping’s instruction to “support Hainan University in creating world-class disciplines”, always gives priority to students’ virtue and promotes the development of Marxist theory discipline as the key disciplines of the university. Besides, HNU gives due consideration to the development of the School of Marxism in making the overall plan for the future development of the university, and provides full guarantees in terms of personnel, finance, materials, and so on, to ensure the priority of Marxist theory discipline in their development. In recent years, Marxist theory discipline of HNU has achieved vigorous development. He hopes that the participating experts provide comprehensive guidance and valuable suggestions on the development of Marxist theory discipline of HNU, so as to make new contributions to the high-quality development of the discipline and Hainan Free Trade Port.

Yang Na, Executive Dean of the School of Marxism, presented in detail the development of Marxist theory discipline in the university. After in-depth discussion based on the Yang’s presentation, the panel holds that the development of Marxist theory discipline in Hainan University was fruitful and promising, and then put forward their respective suggestions.

According to the panel, to develop the Marxist theory discipline well, HNU should make revision to programs for all disciplines and majors, continuously increase policy support for the discipline, and recruit more distinguished teaching staff, especially high-level professionals. It is necessary to integrate discipline resources and further refine the research orientation and development direction of the discipline. As for the implementation of organized scientific research, the relationship between personal breakthroughs and team cooperation should be handled properly, leveraging the advantages of the research team in academic exchanges and grasp of academic frontiers, striving to produce landmark achievements in the discipline. The university should also focus on improving the quality of talent cultivation, promote the setting up of a doctoral program in the discipline, and optimize current talent cultivation programs which highlight students’ personalized development, striving to create a top-notch course focusing on ideological and political development to fulfill the original mission of cultivating talents for the Party and the country.

The participants also include heads of relevant offices and departments of HNU, as well as academic leader and doctoral supervisors of the School of Marxism.
