Wang Qi

On the wall of the second floor of School of Law (School of Discipline Inspection and Supervision), Hainan University displays honors won by the school and profiles of its scientific research team. What Wang Qi, Principal of the School of Law, feel most proud was the group photos of graduates all these years.

“It is my greatest happiness as a law school teacher to see our students grow into talents in posts that contribute to the country’s rule of law.” Wang Qi, with a smile on face, told Hainan Daily reporter.

Wang was appointed Principal of the School of Law by Hainan University in 2017. After taking office, he led the faculty to actively explore the “Three Correlations and Three Promotions” model of mock trial education mechanism, and effectively solved outstanding problems in education and teaching, such as the disconnect between students’ theoretical knowledge and practical ability and the lack of international vision in traditional teaching mode. In November 2020, the project “Exploration and Practice of ‘Three Correlations and Three Promotions’ Mock Trial Education Mechanism” won the first prize of Hainan Province Excellent Teaching Achievement Award.

“We have organically correlated the mock trial teaching activities with other theoretical courses and off-campus practical teaching activities, and have enhanced the attraction of these activities to students through a series of incentive measures such as bonus points for comprehensive evaluation.” Wang Qi said that the School has made great achievements in the mock trial competitions: it won the second place in China in the 10th Price Media Law Moot Court Programme Asia-Pacific in 2017, and went to Oxford University to participate in the Global Final as one of the top five players in the Asia-Pacific region; in 2021, it became the champion of the 19th “Lilv Cup” National University Moot Court Competition.

In order to cultivate students’ international vision, Wang Qi led the faculty members to integrate teaching resources at home and abroad and improve students’ ability to serve foreign legal affairs. Since 2017, the School has invited a number of universities and legal practice departments in Singapore, Malaysia and other countries to select dozens of outstanding undergraduate and postgraduate students to have overseas internships and observe real trials.

Although the daily management of the school is very busy, Wang Qi always sticks to the front line of teaching and strives for excellence in every class. His course Civil Procedure Law is very popular among students. With his efforts, the school has also set up “Lakeside Lecture Hall” and “Law Lecture Hall” to further broaden the academic horizon of postgraduate students. The proportion of seminar courses in postgraduate curriculum has been increased, and a series of academic activities such as “FTP Rule of Law Salon” and “Law of the Sea Salon” have been carried out, changing the dominant position of the traditional lecture-style classroom.

“In class, Principal Wang will explain legal knowledge with specific cases, and focus on analyzing how case trials manifest the values of fairness and justice, which is significant for us to cultivate a fair view of the legal profession and ethics.” Liu Zhenyue, a 2021 law major at Hainan University, told reporters.

Wang Qi’s course Civil Procedure Law was recognized as “National Quality Resource Sharing Course” in 2016 and “Model Course for Ideological and Political Education” in 2021 by the Ministry of Education.

In addition, Wang Qi also serves as an academic advisor for undergraduates, helping them to overcome difficulties in study and life, and guiding them to make sound career plans.

Wang Yufan, a 2017 law major from Hainan University, is currently pursuing a master’s degree at China University of Political Science and Law. “When I was in school, Principal Wang was my academic advisor. He encouraged me to participate in scientific research projects and gave me advice after I was recommended for graduate school.” According to Wang Yufan, Principal Wang treats students like family. He not only donated money to students from disadvantaged families, but also urged them to contact him at any time if they were in trouble.

Being a teacher for more than 30 years, Wang Qi has dedicated his best years to the cause of law education. His passion for teaching has never waned. “I will lead our faculty to continue to deepen the reform of legal education, improve the education mechanism, and promote the construction of first-class law disciplines, so that more students can have more gains from the reform and development of our school.” Wang Qi said.
