From 28 to 30 July 2026, the One Health in Agrifood Systems Forum was held in Sanya, Hainan Province. It was co-hosted by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), Nanjing Agricultural University, Hainan Tropical Disease Research Center, the International Society of Zoological Sciences (ISZS), Sun Yat-sen University and Hainan University (HNU), and supported by Sanya Yazhou Bay Science and Technology City Administration With “From Science to Action, Connecting Villages to Cities, From Investment to Impact” as the theme, this forum drew more than 300 participants worldwide to explore possible pathways for putting the “One Health” concept into action.

The opening ceremony was presided over by Dr. Song Junxia, FAO Deputy Chief Veterinarian and Chief of One Health and Disease Control Branch. Speeches were delivered in succession by Wang Qiyang, Secretary of the CPC Sanya Municipal Committee; Lu Mingzhe, Deputy Director of the China Animal Health and Epidemiology Center; Wang Yuanchao, VicePresident of Nanjing Agricultural University; and Thanawat Tiensin, Assistant DirectorGeneral of FAO. FAO Director General Qu Dongyu delivered a pre-recorded speech at the ceremony.

Vice President Yue Wen stated that Hainan University, located in a tropical area, has long attached great importance to the development of the One Healthrelated disciplines and has established research centers such as the Hainan International One Health Institute. HNU has been cooperating closely with FAO and the International Society of Zoological Sciences (ISZS) in the field of One Health, with the hope of deepening such collaboration in the future to support the biosafety strategy of Hainan Free Trade Port.

Following the opening ceremony, three plenary presentations were given by Professor Yvon Le Maho, Research Fellow Zhu Yongguan and Dr. Song Junxia.

The forum featured two highlevel dialogues and six parallel sessions. The two highlevel dialogues were themed “Translating One Health Research Outcomes into Effective Policy and Governance” and “SciencetoPractice Delivery and Action Translation under the One Health Framework”.

Six parallel sessions were organized in the form of presentations plus roundtable discussions. Professor Zhang Zhibin, Vice President and Executive Director of the International Society of Zoological Sciences, as well as Dean of Hainan International One Health Institute, delivered a presentation entitled Theory and Practice of the Collaborative Prevention and Control of Rodents, Ectoparasites and Animal Epidemic Diseases.

On the afternoon of July 29, the Sanya Consensus on One Health in Agrifood Systems was officially released. The ceremony was attended by Zhang Changfeng, Vice Mayor of Sanya; Thanawat Tiensin, Assistant Director-General of the FAO; Professor Yvon Le Maho from the Multidisciplinary Institute of the French National Centre for Scientific Research; Song Junxia, Director of the One Health and Animal Diseases Centre, FAO; Klaus Osterrieder, President of the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover; Professor Maeli Melotto from the University of California, Davis; Zhang Zhibin, Dean of the Hainan International One Health Institute, Hainan University, and other distinguished guests and experts.

Zhang Changfeng, Vice Mayor of Sanya, delivered the closing remarks, emphasizing that One Health is an essential part of Sanya’s future development strategy and Sanya stands ready to collaborate with all parties in advancing One Health demonstration initiatives under the guidance of the Consensus.

In his closing remarks, FAO Assistant Director-General Thanawat Tiensin noted that the One Health approach is vital to future global development. He said, “This forum conducted systematic deliberations and reached consensus on a range of One Health issues spanning academia, policy, practice, and translational research, representing a significant milestone in the development of One Health.” In the future, FAO will continue to advance One Health development on a global scale, he added.

After the conference, some participants visited the FAO Hainan Project Coordination Office, the Industrial Promotion Center and the Research and Learning Valley in Yazhou Bay Science and Technology City.
