On November 18, 2025, Shanghai Ranking, a renowned higher education evaluation agency, released this year’s edition of the Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS). Hainan University has 22 subjects listed in the ranking, placing it 53rd in China by the total number of entries. This marks a staggering 340% increase from the 5 subjects in 2021.
Notably, three of its fields, including Agricultural Sciences, Food Science & Technology, and Hospitality & Tourism Management, have entered the world’s top 50, with Marine/Ocean Engineering into the world’s top 100.

HNU’s Rise in the Shanghai Ranking GRAS (2021-2025)

The GRAS ranks universities worldwide on their global competitiveness across five major fields: Natural Sciences, Engineering, Life Sciences, Medical Sciences, and Social Sciences.
The ranking employs nine objective indicators grouped into the following five performance categories:
