From September 3 to 4, nearly 13,000 new students of Hainan University (HNU) from home and abroad arrived as expected. Li Hu, Chairman of the HNU Council, and President Luo Qingming, Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), headed a team to inspect dormitories, canteens and various welcome centres to greet frontline staff and volunteers. They also conducted on-site inspection of the orientation work of colleges, extended cordial greetings to new students and their parents, and encouraged the students to anchor themselves in the Hainan Free Trade Port (HNFTP) and strive for progress on their new journey. All HNU campuses made efforts to offer “one-stop” services and featured activities to leave a warm “first impression” on the new students.

Under the unified planning and deployment of the University Party Committee, all departments and units of HNU worked in synergy to offer the newcomers full-chain services encompassing “shuttle bus pickup, on-campus transfer, registration procedures and school life orientation”, ensuring a seamless transition from their homes to the university. Reception points were established at major transportation hubs including Haikou Meilan International Airport, railway stations and ports, with university shuttle buses arranged for “point-to-point” pick-up and drop-off, and campus transfer services linking welcome centres with dormitory compounds. Cooling amenities and refreshments were also provided at the pop-up rest areas for the parents.

All campuses also created orientation highlights reflecting their unique positioning, featuring a distinctive academy-based educational model.
Haidian Campus: Qingyun College adopted a “pre-enrollment education model” through summer freshmen groups to foster their self-management and enable them to “get to know the university before arrival”. Chunming College prepared creative gift packages, inviting freshmen to write “a letter to the four-year-later self” to seal their youthful aspirations. Chengfeng college prepared ice boxes for faculty and students, embracing the freshmen with refreshing services and the warmest guidance.
Danzhou Campus: Tanya College put up roll-up banners and a signature wall for freshmen to sign and take photos. Danxin College offered “one-on-one” volunteer assistance. It also organized freshmen and their parents to watch the live broadcast of the Commemoration Ceremony for the 80th Anniversary of the Victory of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War.
Guanlanhu Campus: Jinzhao College staged surprise ceremonies for freshmen whose birthdays coincided with the registration day, with birthday songs and cakes fostering a warm atmosphere.
Yazhou Campus: Yazhou College set up a signature wall and a refreshment area, and volunteers assisted the new students with luggage transfer throughout the process, imbuing the campus with humanistic care.

“From the airport to the dormitory, volunteers guided us throughout the journey, and the registration procedures were done just in seconds. HNU’s efficiency and enthusiasm touched me deeply,” said Yang Zhihan, a freshman majoring in Music Performance from Gansu Province. He added that the campus exudes a youthful spirit everywhere, with lush coconut palms and academies filled with a rich academic ambiance.
University leadership, as well as heads of relevant departments and units participated in the inspection to ensure the safety and orderliness of the student orientation work.
