Hainan University (HNU) held the 30th Distinguished Scientist Lecture in the auditorium of the Tin Ka Ping Building on the morning of October 25. The featured speaker, Peng Xiaojun, a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and professor at Dalian University of Technology, delivered a lecture on “Intelligent Molecular Engineering”. Fu Xuanguo, Secretary of CPC HNU Committee, along with other senior HNU leaders Gao Diangong, Liu Qian, Li Buhong, Han Shumei, Tan Yong, and Yang Zhixin, attended the event which was presided over by Vice President Zou Yonghua.

Starting from the industrial chain of chemical products, Prof. Peng introduced the cutting-edge molecular engineering with examples such as weather-resistant printing dyes, optical IT materials, and flexible polarizing films. He highlighted the industrial potential of intelligent molecules and discussed the research focus, which includes understanding the relationship between molecular structure and function, as well as the intelligent design and manufacture of molecules. Peng emphasized that these areas are pivotal to overcoming production bottlenecks and achieving breakthroughs in material performance.
Using examples like smart dye molecules, Peng pointed to emerging opportunities in electronics industry, including photolithography materials and display chemicals, and in biopharmaceutical industry, such as molecular probes and targeted drugs.
