On the morning of June 23, Hainan University (HNU) held the 2024 graduation ceremony and degrees conferment ceremony in the multi-functional stadium, celebrating the most significant achievements of 9,822 graduating students.

Fu Xuanguo, Chairman of the HNU Council, and Luo Qingming, the President of HNU, Chairman of the Academic Degrees Committee and academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences attended the ceremony. Other leadership members of the university also participated in the ceremony, including Zhang Jiyou, Cao Bing, Gao Tiangong, Nie Qingbin, Qiu Xiguang, He Yong, Zou Yonghua, Liu Qian, Li Buhong, Chen Jun, Han Shumei, Tan Yong and Yang Zhixin. Luo Qingming delivered a speech with the title of “Set Sail When the Wind is Strong, set off When the Mind is Shining”. In his speech, Luo extended congratulation to the Class of 2024 and his heartfelt gratitude to all the faculty, parents and people from all walks of life who had worked hard and devoted themselves to the growth of the students.

Luo noted that the Class of 2024 has enriched their knowledge and insight, and sublimated their ideals and beliefs during their years in HNU. Now, they are full of strength, courage and confidence which are derived from the everlasting “HNU Spirit”, from the development of HNU, and from the booming Hainan Free Trade Port. Today, with these strength, courage and confidence, they are about to embark on a new journey and are sure to write a new chapter in their future development.

Luo Qingming shared his heartfelt wish with all graduates: The clearer one understands, the more steadfast one acts; observing the present, one also glimpses the future; towards new goals, let us set off anew. He hoped that the graduates integrate their ideals into the national development and progress of the times, and pass on the HNU spirit in their efforts to develop their own career. He hoped that on the new journey, students could boast the courage and resilience to face up to difficulties, challenges and setbacks, and the determination to achieve what they want to be; students need to be optimistic, perseverant and brave in the pursuit of their dreams. He would be very much happy to see the students` intelligence and wisdom displayed in the areas of economic development, cultural development, social progress, and the scientific and technological innovation.

“Your growth is a part of the process of deepening reform and rapid development of Hainan University and you are growing along the same direction as that of the Hainan Free Trade Port development.” Luo said that Hainan is in desperate need of talents than at any time in history. In the construction of the Hainan FTP, what is the role of Hainan University? The answer is that HNU will make constant efforts to contribute to the development of Hainan FTP. This is a solemn commitment of HNU, and also the responsibility of every member of the HNU. He looked forward to seeing student stay in Hainan and realize their dreams in the construction of the FTP.

Luo encouraged all graduates to enhance their sense of historical responsibility and mission, and strive for the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation. With a broad mind and a long-term vision, they should continue to achieve new dreams, creations, transformations, and blooming.

Representatives of the graduates expressed their deep feelings and gratitude for their alma mater, recalling the years of growth at the university and sharing their vision for future.

Ren Laitan, a representative of graduates from Pucheng College and the Law School of Hainan University, said that his dream would flow with the development of HNU and the Hainan FTP. Four years have passed in a flash, and the scene of the first day of university life is still vivid. He sincerely hopes that as the alumni of Hainan University and contributors to the construction of Hainan FTP, the graduates will never forget the alma mater and the beautiful island with coconut trees, sea breeze, and charming scenery.

I hope that all of you can rise unsullied from mud and always keep your original aspiration.” said Wang Mengnan, a master`s graduate representative from Qingyun College and the School of Computer Science and Technology. He added that although the graduates will embark on different journeys, they are always HNUers. “We need to surely keep up with the times, maintain a high-spirited attitude of fearlessness in face of difficulties, and carry forward HNU`s spirit that we dare to fight hardships and struggle, bearing our own responsibilities.”

“I wish my alma mater a better tomorrow.” said Nnabuike Sunday Chisom, a representative of international graduates from Nigeria. He studied in HNU with sponsorship from the Hainan Provincial Government Scholarship. He added that through several years of study at HNU, he not only improved his Chinese language skills, and received various honors and awards, but more importantly, he fully demonstrated his talents and exercised various abilities here. “I will continue to maintain passion and enthusiasm, and better demonstrate my strength and creativity, and contribute my own strength to building a global community of shared future.”

Professor Zhang Jiachao, a faculty representative from the School of Food Science and Engineering, expressed his wish to all the graduates. “You should face up to difficulties and shoulder responsibilities bravely to sublimate morality and self-discipline.” He believed that the students were ready for the new journey, like young eagles eager to find their own sky. He hoped that with the concern and blessing, the graduates would go ahead without hesitation, even if the road ahead would be long and tough.

She hoped that the graduates would uphold the scholastic spirit of striving to learn and explore, and seize the opportunities and fight against the challenges to set sail in their life.

Li Qingping, an alumnus of class 2003 and the chairman of Dongguan Darui Electronics Co., Ltd., delivered a speech titled “Let the Road Ahead Full with Ideals and Beliefs, Actions and Persistence”. “The road ahead is always full of hardship. When you encounter setbacks, challenges, and choices, I believe that the fighting spirit and persistence you have learned in HNU will surely make you go forward with determination. In this process, you need to constantly reflect on yourselves and improve yourselves, and find the value and meaning of life, so as to realize your ideals and goals,” Li said.
