At the closing ceremony of the 49th International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva, Chen Yun, a professor from the School of Civil Engineering and Architecture of Hainan University, was awarded the Special Commendation Gold Award for his project “A Gradual Yield Damping Device for Reducing Structure Seismic Response”. It is the highest award at the International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva and the first award of this kind won by a professor from Hainan Province.
Due to the great uncertainty of seismic actions, traditional dampers may not be able to dissipate energy effectively when subjected to earthquakes exceeding their design strength, and even suffer from damage, thus failing to effectively mitigate the seismic response of structures. Chen Yun’s team developed a series of graded yield dampers suitable for different conditions, which can effectively control the seismic responses of building structures in small, medium, and large earthquakes, significantly enhancing the dampers’ ability to cope with the uncertainty of seismic intensity. Currently, this project has been applied in different building structures such as schools, hospitals, disease control centers, and high-rise residential buildings, greatly ensuring the seismic safety of these structures.
