Huang Haiwen, Deputy to the NPC: Xingglong Coffee is expected to enjoy a promising future if we do a good job in international trade and intensive processing
(By Yuan Yu, accredited correspondent of Hainan Daily) “Xinglong Coffee, with profound culture, is one of the oldest coffee brands in China.” Huang Haiwen, Deputy to the 14th NPC and Logistics Manager of the Administrative Logistics Department of CHIA TAI Xinglong Coffee Industry Development Co., Ltd., demonstrated the brands product of her hometown to a reporter from Hainan Daily on March 5, 2023. As a descendant of returned Indonesian Chinese, Huang has special emotional memory for Xinglong Coffee.
According to Huang, in the 1950s, returned overseas Chinese from 21 countries and regions came to Xinglong Overseas Chinese Farm, bringing back not only the coffee seeds and planting techniques, but also the tradition of making and drinking coffee as well as the craft of coffee brewing. With their efforts, Xinglong Coffee has been gradually known to the world.
With optimistic view on coffee industry in Xinglong, many entrepreneurs in recent years established their own businesses in Wanning, Hainan province, and have been exploring new development models of coffee industry. A typical example is CHIA TAI Xinglong Coffee Industrial Park which is formerly known as Xinglong Overseas Chinese Farm Coffee Factory, the first coffee factory since the founding of People’s Republic of China. Huang has been working in this factory for more than 30 years, assuming different positions like product analyst, workshop director and deputy director, witnessing the development history of Xinglong coffee. Now, she takes up a new position in CHIA TAI Xinglong Coffee Industrial Park.
Xinglong Coffee tastes fragrant but not too bitter, rich but not too strong, and has a lasting aftertaste, becoming a favored choice of consumers. Before the aromatic Xinglong coffee is available, nearly ten processing steps have to be gone through, including picking, peeling, drying, hulling, again drying, sieving, grading, selecting, bagging and preserving for more than six months, and finally roasting.
“The chlorogenic acid content of Xinglong Coffee is second only to Blue Mountain coffee of Jamaica,” Huang emphasized. The reason for its smooth and rich taste lies in the special processing technology. Butter and sugar are added in the roasting process of coffee beans, so the coffee still tastes rich and fragrant without sugar and milk. With this technique, the coffee is known as “Xinglong Coffee with overseas Chinese traditional flavor”.
“Nowadays, in my hometown, we drink Xinglong Coffee every day. It can be said that the day is woken up by Xinglong Coffee. We welcome everyone to taste Xinglong Coffee in Wanning, Hainan.” Huang indicated that Xinglong Coffee is the first national coffee brand of the People’s Republic of China, as well as one of the first 100 batches of national geographical indication products protected by the European Union. According to the relevant industry reports, by 2025, China will be a market for coffee worth one trillion-yuan. Supported by the favorable policies of the Hainan Free Trade Port, we will carry out intensive processing of coffee and promote the coffee to the international market. The coffee industry in Xinglong is expected to thrive in the coming years.
