    1. Introduction to First-Level DisciplineMaster’s Degree Authorization Site forChinese Language and Literature

    Chinese Language and Literature is a traditional advantageous discipline of Hainan University, which set up the undergraduate major of Chinese Language and Literature in 1988, and the second-level disciplines of Literature and Art, Comparative Literature and World Literature were authorized for the master's degree in 2002. In 2010, the first-level discipline of Chinese Language and Literature was qualified for the authorization of master's degree, and was approved as the first-level key discipline (cultivation discipline) of Hainan Province in 2013, which was approved as the characteristic key discipline of Hainan Province in 2016. The discipline focuses on applying what students has learned to real practice, cares about real issues, focuses on major national cultural strategies, and strives to serve the development of local culture, with distinctive features in the study of main literature, minority languages and literature of Hainan, the collation of historical documents of the South China Sea, the study of historical and cultural excavations in Hainan, and the criticism of contemporary literature and art.

     

    Literature and Art

    The main research fields are: 1. Critical theory and cultural studies: based on the continuous research on the history of Chinese and Western literary theories, the department focuses on the study of critical theory and its connection with contemporary literature and cultural practices, which is unique in the study of online literary production. 2. Research on classical Chinese literary theory and history of ancient thought: covering the prose of pre-Qin philosophers, the metaphysics of Wei and Jin, the philosophy of Lao-tsu and Zhuang Zi, and the study of Zen Buddhism. The results are unique in the study of the text of Lao-tsu and the aesthetic thought of Lao-tsu and Zhuang Zi. 3. Research on cultural and creative industries and public culture: focusing on the survival and development strategy of network culture industry, film and television industry, and providing decision-making consultation for the government to formulate the development program and policies and regulations for cultural industry.

     

    Ancient Chinese Literature

    The main research areas are: 1. South China Sea literature research: mainly collecting, organizing and researching the "Path Changing Book", genealogies and local records of the South China Sea. 2. Research on the "Belt and Road" and marine culture: exploring and researching marine culture, focusing on immigrant culture, compiling the history of Southeast Asian overseas Chinese and genealogy, carrying out research on overseas Chinese overhanging buildings, etc., and carrying out in-depth research on the languages, literature and folk cultures of Hainan's ethnic minorities. 3. Research on the literature and history of the South China Sea. Hainan historical and cultural figures represented by Su Shi, Hai Rui, Qiu Jun and their literary creation research, Su Shi research, which takes Hainan Su studies as a breakthrough, gathering domestic and foreign academic strength, and gradually expanding the academic impact. 4. Theoretical research on novels in the late Qing Dynasty. Launched a series of research results regarding Wang Zhongqi and other modern novelists.

     

    Contemporary and Modern ChineseLiterature

    The main research areas are: 1. Contemporary literary criticism: research on the current situation and development of "main theme" literature, film and television dramas, which is a leading position in the domestic academic circle. It is of great practical significance for promoting the strategy of a strong socialist culture and realizing the cultural renaissance of the Chinese nation. 2. Research on modern native literature. Exploring the relationship between native literature and the rise of modern Chinese thought from the perspective of the "nation and state". Research on translation literature and the transformation of modern literature: Combining literary translation with the modernization of Chinese literature, and analyzing the multiple streams of new literature. 4. Research on Hainan Literature: Examining the current situation and characteristics of contemporary literary creation in Hainan in the perspective of "island-land" cultural interaction, which is of great practical significance for the promotion of the construction of local culture under the vision of "South China Sea Culture".

     

    Comparative and World Literature

    The main research areas are: 1. Gender poetics in world literature: The first feminist literary criticism since the 1980s. Research on gender culture in minority literature from the perspective of globalization, forming the local characteristics of Hainan. 2. History of Chinese and foreign literary exchanges: studying the cultural composition of the European and American literary traditions, literary exchanges in the East Asian Cultural Circle, and the comparison of Chinese and Japanese literature and cultures, and carrying out comparative studies in the mode of pluralistic interaction of world literature.

     

    Linguistics and Applied Linguistics

    The main research areas are as follows: 1. Hainan island language research: research on the dialects of Min and Lingao in Hainan Province, research on the language and culture of Hainan Island, and providing strong support for the research on the language and culture of the South China Sea under the vision of the "Belt and Road" initiative. 2. Typological language research: utilizing the rich language and dialect resources of Hainan Island, focusing on the comparative research between languages and dialects under the perspective of typological linguistics, and exploring the history, development process and reasons of Chinese dialects. Research on international Chinese language teaching: Conducting research in the areas of pragmatics, semantic cognition, syntactic structure, etc., and promoting international Chinese language under the perspective of the "Belt and Road" Initiative.

     

    2. Introduction to First-Level DisciplineMaster’s Degree Authorization Site for Philosophy

    In February 1992, Prof. Cao Xiren, a famous scholar, presided over the creation of the Social Science Research Center of Hainan University, which mainly developed philosophy, history, sociology, political science and religion. In 2001, under the efforts of famous scholars Meng Meng, Zhang Zhiyang and Chen Jiaqi, the discipline of foreign philosophy was approved by the Academic Degrees Office of the State Council as a Master Authorization Site, which filled the blank of the discipline of Philosophy in Hainan University and Hainan Province. At present, the Center for Social Sciences has a first-level master program in Philosophy, with four second-level disciplines of Foreign Philosophy, Chinese Philosophy, Marxist Philosophy, and Ethics.

     

Foreign Philosophy

The discipline believes that a deeper understanding of Western philosophy aims to gain insight into the "paradoxical tension" between "Greek reason" and "Hebrew revelation" in the evolution of Western thought and culture. This paradoxical relationship is incompatible with the apparent "Euro-American centrism" and with any form of centrism, such as the centrism tendency in the "ancient-modern" and "divine" controversies. What it teaches us is precisely that Chinese culture, as one of the sources of world culture, is supposed to provide its own independent and complementary references in a non-central, i.e., paradoxical way.

Foreign Philosophy sets up three directions: rereading the history of Western philosophy, political philosophy, and philosophy of language. The overall emphasis is on the adjustment of foundation and perspective, specifically focusing either on the explicit and implicit relationship of language to experience, the priori, and the transcendent, or on the critical relevance of politics, philosophy, theology, and even science, in particular the types and orientations of interpretations. It is particularly worth emphasizing that although this discipline focuses on "foreign philosophy," it aims at the construction of "Chinese modern philosophy" (not "modern Chinese philosophy"), i.e., it starts from the history of Western philosophy and the history of the world's philosophers. That is to say, starting from the "paradoxical eventuality" of absolute essentialism and nihilism polarized by revelation and reason, transcendence (a priori) and experience, and pointing to a metaphorical origin, we will reply to the eventual space which is neither absolute essentialism nor nihilism, but at the same time a paradoxical correlation of the two, in order to see the proper position of the modern Chinese philosophy. --Knowing the pure nature, but sticking to the darkness, returning to one's roots and restoring one's destiny" - and finally to return to the base point of "Chinese Modern Philosophy", which has borne the destiny of China's century-long wandering. Each of us must therefore be prepared to answer the question: What is "Chinese modern philosophy"? We have done quite a deep research in this direction and enjoy a special position in the research and teaching of "foreign philosophy" in China.

The rate of doctoral admission in the discipline of Foreign Philosophy has been maintained at over 60%.

Chinese philosophy

This discipline emphasizes a coherent understanding of the history of Chinese philosophy, not only through the examination of ancient Chinese philosophy to understand the way of existence of Chinese life and explore the expression of the Chinese spirit, but also focuses on the changes and creations of Chinese thought since the end of the Ming Dynasty and the beginning of the Qing Dynasty, including the results of the response of Chinese philosophers to the conflict between Chinese and Western cultures since the late Qing Dynasty to the present day. The discipline also emphasizes in-depth study of the history of Buddhism in China and India, the study of primitive and Mahayana Buddhist scripts, the interplay between Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism, and socially engaged Buddhism.

The discipline emphasizes the integration of literature, history and philosophy, and the in-depth understanding of the ideological relationship and comparative study between different cultures of China, the West and India in the overall vision of the liberal arts. It is intended to enable postgraduates of Chinese philosophy to transcend the contradiction between Chinese and Western philosophy and culture, to realize the common destiny of mankind and the basic problems pondered by philosophy in different cultures and philosophies, as well as the unique way of life in China.

The research areas of the Chinese Philosophy major include 1) Classical Chinese philosophy, 2) Modern Chinese philosophy and history of thought, 3) Comparative Chinese and Western philosophy, and 4) Chinese philosophy of religion.

Marxist Philosophy

The research direction of this discipline focuses on the two major directions of contemporary Marxist philosophy and the history of Marxist philosophy, and the research and teaching cover the fields of contemporary Chinese Marxist philosophy, Marxist philosophical principles, foreign Marxism, and the history of the development of Marxist philosophy.

The discipline will be based on the original classic of Marxist philosophy, which has combined with the reality of social development in contemporary China and drawn on the quality resources of sister disciplines such as Chinese and foreign philosophy to construct contemporary Chinese philosophy.

Ethics

The most concerned direction of this discipline is to combine the theory of ethics with the reality of China. In the words of Bacon, that is, philosophy should help to improve the situation of human beings. Specifically, on the one hand, it is necessary to study in depth the traditional ethical theories of China and the West, especially the ethical theories of ancient Greece and the modern West, and set up two research directions: the history of Western ethics and Kantian ethics; on the other hand, it is necessary to analyze the theories of Chinese and Western ethics in conjunction with the ethical reality of China and even of the world today, especially the "crisis of modernity". We have established research directions in the ethics of life and technology, closely integrating theoretical research on ethics with issues in human real life. This combination has two advantages: on the one hand, it can serve society by endeavoring to explore new ways to improve human morality, and on the other hand, it serves theory, because the breakthroughs of future ethics exist in new moral realities, and only by combining new moral realities can it be possible to find new ethical theories.
