Mathematics and Applied Mathematics Major is a national first-class discipline authorized to offer bachelor's degree program under the "Double Ten-thousand Talents Plan", a second bachelor enrollment program, and a major of Hainan University selected as the "first batch of basic disciplines of outstanding students training program 2.0 base".It has built a robust professional faculty with numerous talents, a group of academic teams with high academic attainments and fruitful research results, who have done a lot of fruitful work in the fields of pure mathematics, computational mathematics, probability theory and mathematical statistics, applied mathematics, operations research and cybernetics, and so on.The Department of Mathematics has 33 full-time teachers, including 8 professors, 12 associate professors, 25 teachers with a doctorate degree or above; 1 candidate for the National "Hundred-Thousand-Ten Thousand Talents Program", 3 experts receiving special government subsidies under the State Council, 1 Baosteel Outstanding Teacher, 2 Hainan Nanhai Famous Teachers, 1 Outstanding Talent of Hainan, 4 Leading Talents, and 7 Top-notch Talents.In the past five years, the Department has presided over 15 projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China and 30 projects at provincial level, with a scientific research fund of more than RMB 6 million; It has published more than 200 academic papers, of which more than 100 have been indexed by SCI; and it has won one first prize, second prize, and third prize of scientific and technological progress award each as primary contributor in Hainan Province. The Department of Mathematics is approved to establish a first-level discipline of mathematics to offer master's degree program, an academician's workstation in Hainan Province and the Key Laboratory of Engineering Modeling and Statistical Computing in Hainan Province. The "Graph Theory and Optimization Methods" has been approved as the "Double Hundred" Talent Team of Hainan Province. It introduced a team of Russian academicians, led by Prof. Wenbin Guo, who co-solved a famous conjecture and an open problem formulated by the algebraist Wielandt in 1963.
The Department of Mathematics has more than 500 undergraduate students enrolled and more than 60 postgraduates.The cultivation goal of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics: cultivate new mathematical professionals with solid basic knowledge, scientific research and scientific and technological development ability, as well as applied talents with the theoretical foundation of big data analysis, economic management, machine learning, etc., and strong practical ability to meet the needs of the construction of the socialist market economy in accordance with the development needs of the country. The main courses include Mathematical Analysis, Advanced Algebra, Real Functions, Generalized Function Analysis, Topology, Analytic Geometry, Numerical Analysis, Modern Algebra, Differential Equations, Probability Theory, Mathematical Statistics, Discrete Mathematics, Graph Theory, Data Structures, Design and Analysis of Algorithms, Data Analysis, Mathematical Modeling, and Operational Research, etc. Students will be conferred the Bachelor of Science who pass the exams in four-year study.So far, this major has sent thousands of qualified professionals to the country, including high-tech companies, R & D posts, primary and secondary school teachers, etc.The employment rate of undergraduates is more than 90%, the employment rate of masters is 100%, and most of them have been the backbone of their respective positions.Some students chose to continue their studies. 8% of graduates are exempted from entrance examination for postgraduate programs in institutions include the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Tsinghua University, Peking University, Zhejiang University, the University of Science and Technology of China, Nankai University, and other well-known colleges and research institutes, and 40% chose further study.
The Department of Mathematics focuses on cultivating students' professional basic ability and innovation ability, and actively encourages students to participate in wonderful campus cultural activities, enriching the second classroom of students and improving their comprehensive quality. It organizes students to participate in various disciplinary competitions at all levels, such as "National Mathematical Modeling Competition for College Students", "National Mathematics Competition for College Students", "U.S. Mathematical Modeling Competition for College Students", "Internet + College Students Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition", etc. In the past five years, we have trained our students to win 6 first-class prizes at the national level, 30 second-class prizes at the national level, and 150 first-class prizes at the provincial level. The postgraduates have published more than 30 SCI-indexed papers and applied for patents. In the 38th Mathematical Contest In Modeling (MCM) and Interdisciplinary Contest in Modeling (ICM) in the U.S. in 2022, the team of Yize Zhou, majoring in Information and Computing Science in the class of 2018, won the Outstanding Winner, and won the award of Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM Award) at the same time. In 2023, Xintao Peng, a student of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics in the class of 2019, won the first prize in the senior group in the final of the 14th Chinese Mathematics Competitions.
