1. Undergraduate Program in Biological Sciences

Program highlights: Designated as one of the inaugural national-level first-class undergraduate programs, this Program was introduced in 2008 with the approval of the Ministry of Education. In 2015, it successfully enrolled the first cohort of students for its natural science experimental class. This Program falls under the first-level Biology discipline which obtained authorization to confer doctorate degrees in 2010 and established a postdoctoral research mobile station in 2014, thereby creating an integrated system for undergraduate, master's and doctoral training. The Undergraduate Program in Biological Sciences boasts 1 national-level teaching team, 2 provincial-level teaching teams,5provincial-level top-quality courses, and 2 provincial-level experimental teaching demonstration centers. The School that offers this Program hosts the Innovative Talent Introduction Base for Tropical Biology and Medicine designated by the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Key Laboratory of Tropical Bioresources under the Ministry of Education, and the Basic Biology Public Teaching Platform of Hainan University. Additionally, the Program has spearheaded the establishment of the Hainan University One Health Research Institute, and collaborated in the creation of the National Key Laboratory of South China Sea Marine Resource Utilization, as well as the Hainan Provincial Key Laboratory for Sustainable Exploitation of Tropical Biological Resources, serving as a national key laboratory cultivation base jointly established by provincial and ministerial parties.

Faculty: Currently, the Program is supported by 43 full-time faculty members, including 19 with senior professional titles and 14 with associate senior professional titles; 37 of them hold doctorate degrees. The Program is proud to have one academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, one scientist appointed to a position within the technology system of modern agricultural industry, and three National Baosteel Excellent Teachers. Furthermore, it boasts a cohort of exceptional experts, including recipients of the Hainan Province "100 Talents Plan", Nanhai (South China Sea) Masters, Leading Talents in Hainan Province, Top-notch Talents in Hainan Province, and recipients of the "515 Talents Project". In essence, the Undergraduate Program in Biological Sciences enjoys a well-structured and ample faculty with outstanding teaching proficiency and a strong academic background.

Educational objectives: In the context of free trade port construction with Chinese characteristics, with an emphasis on meeting the national strategic needs to construct a Healthy Hainan and a Healthy China, as well as addressing critical biological issues encountered during free trade port development, this Program aims to cultivate students into high-caliber professionals with a solid foundation in political literacy, theoretical knowledge, practical skills, exceptional innovative spirit, and a broad international perspective. These highly-skilled individuals will be capable of engaging in scientific research, teaching and management work in various fields such as biology, medicine, health, food and environmental sciences within research institutions, higher education institutions, and enterprises and institutions.

2. Undergraduate Program in Biotechnology

Program highlights: It has been selected as a national-level first-class undergraduate program. The Department of Biotechnology was founded in 1999 at the former South China University of Tropical Agriculture, commenced enrollment in 2001, and was designated a featured academic program in Hainan Province in 2009, exhibiting a solid foundation in professional education. In 2019, it was approved as a national-level first-class undergraduate program. Currently, in the context of "One Health" for Hainan, the Undergraduate Program in Biotechnology will further progress to become an interdisciplinary program based in science, integrating medicine and pharmacy. After nearly two decades of development, leveraging national key laboratories/cultivation bases, provincial experimental teaching demonstration centers, provincial key laboratories and other practical teaching platforms, this Program has garnered provincial-level featured academic program and teaching team honors, in addition to two provincial-level top-quality courses. Notably, students have won an array of domestic and international competition awards. Furthermore, the Program is supported by experimental and practical teaching bases such as the Key Laboratory of Tropical Bioresources under the Ministry of Education, the Platform for R&D of New Drugs from Tropical Marine Organisms, and academician workstations.
