1. Food Quality and Safety

The major of food quality and safety at Hainan University was established in 2003, approved by the Ministry of Education in 2004 and enrolled students in the same year. It was approved as a featured major in Hainan Province in 2013 and a first-class undergraduate major in Hainan Province in 2020. In 2023, the major ranked 28th (B+) in China, with remarkable construction achievements.

Based on the tropical and subtropical industry, the major’s focus is on tropical and subtropical fruits and vegetables and aquatic products. we aim to foster students’ abilities of exploring the unknown, and Innovation and entrepreneurship . We closely cooperates with many enterprises to provide students with hands-on experience and internships opportunities. Through the program in food Quality and Safety, students can keep up with the modern development of food industry, and obtain the abilities to work in the management of food production, quality control, product development, scientific research and engineering design. The major aims to cultivate senior technical and management personnel with a strong sense of social responsibility and professional ethics, knowledge of chemistry, biology and food science, mastery of modern food analysis theory and experimental skills, and ability to engage in food quality and safety detection, evaluation, supervision and management and scientific research in the fields of quality and technical supervision, entry and exit inspection and quarantine, import and export trade.

2. Food Science and Engineering

The major of food science and engineering at Hainan University originated from the major of tropical crop products processing of South China Tropical Crops College in 1958, which was one of the earliest undergraduate majors established in Hainan Province. It became a national characteristic major construction site in 2007, and a national first-class undergraduate major and passed the professional certification of China's engineering education in 2019. In 2023, it ranked 28th (A) in the ranking of Chinese universities by subject, and has formed an integrated talent training system for undergraduates and graduate students.

The major focuses on tropical and subtropical fruits and vegetables and aquatic products. Through close cooperation with many enterprises, we are able to combine teaching, practice and research in the program. After systematic learning, students would quickly adapt to the needs of modern food industry development, equipped with skills to excel in the management of food production, quality control, product development, scientific research and engineering design. After graduation, students can pursue a range of careers in academia, food industries and government.
