1. Master of Science in Resource Utilization and Plant Protection

Profile of the Major (field)

Resource Utilization and Plant Protection is a major (field) based on the two-way demand of national food security and green development of agriculture, including two cultivation directions: agricultural resource utilization and plant protection.

Hainan is located in the tropics, where is rich in water, heat, light, plants and other agricultural resources. It is China's important base for breeding southern seeds, winter melons, vegetables and tropical fruits, as well as an ideal place for developing efficient tropical agriculture. After more than 30 years of development, the tropical efficient agriculture has become an important pillar industry in Hainan and an important component of the tropical modern agriculture. However, while the rich agricultural resources are suitable for the development of tropical modern agriculture, certain climate-soil factors and irrational utilization of agricultural resources have also brought many ecological problems to Hainan: such as acidification and quality decline of arable soil, frequent occurrence of harmful organisms, unscientific application of agrochemical products, unstable quality of agricultural products, etc., bringing a series of challenges and pressures to agro-ecological environment.

Currently, the practitioners in the field of agriculture are more concerned about the yield of agricultural products, economic benefits, and the efficient use of light and heat resources, while ignoring the quality of agricultural products and the efficient and safe use of resources such as soil and agrochemical products. This major (field) effectively combines the technology of efficient utilization of tropical agricultural resources and the technology of ecological environment and plant protection, and cultivates compound high-level talents who master the technology of efficient utilization of agricultural resources and the technology of ecological environment and plant protection, and who can also apply the professional technology to the research, application, development and promotion of modern agricultural production activities. The graduates of this major should master the solid basic theories, systematic professional knowledge, development trends, and related policies, humanities and social sciences in this field, who also need to master the latest technology and professional skills in this field and apply them to agricultural production practice.

3. Master of Ecology

Introduction to Discipline

Ecology is the main discipline among the "double first-class" construction of our university. The discipline closely follows the university's philosophy of "Tropical, Oceanic and Special Zone", and carries out ecology teaching and scientific research in a comprehensive and systematic way, with distinctive regional characteristics and advantages.

The discipline is supported by the State Key Laboratory, the Key Laboratory of the Ministry of Education and other platforms, with more than 1,200 m2 and 4 field training platforms. The instructor team is well-structured, specializing in training high-level academic talents for colleges and universities, scientific research institutes, and enterprises and institutions.

The discipline of Ecology of Hainan University includes four stable basic main disciplines, and each direction is closely connected and integrated. The basic information of each direction is introduced as follows:

Plant ecology

Plant ecology is the traditional direction of ecology at Hainan University, which can be traced back to the pioneering work of Mr. Lin Ying, vice president of the Ecological Society of China and editorial board member of Vegetation of China, and Mr. Zhong Yi, the "King of Hainan Plants". This direction takes plant diversity and vegetation in the tropical region as the main research object, and adopts the means of vegetation inventory and permanent samples, plant classification and system, plant and other organisms interactions, molecular ecology and biogeography to explore the vegetation structure, the formation and maintenance mechanism of plant diversity, and protect all those plants, so as to serve the construction of the Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park and the National Pilot Area of Ecological Civilization (Hainan). Focus on: 1) basic issues of vegetation ecology in Hainan; 2) plant diversity conservation; 3) plant migration and evolution in Hainan Island and the South China Sea region.

Ecosystem ecology

Starting from the formation of ecosystem productivity with physiological foundations, with the biogeochemical cycle of carbon, nitrogen, and water as the core, and the long-term positioning and monitoring of ecosystems, ecosystem control experiments, isotope tracing technology, vorticity related technology, vegetation remote sensing, ecosystem process modeling models as the main technical means, the focus of research is on: 1) the formation of ecosystem carbon sinks, the improvement of water use efficiency, CO2 fertilization effect, biogeographical feedback of ecosystems under global warming, and the impact of human activities on the functional pattern of ecosystem services; 2) The structure, function, and dynamics of typical tropical ecosystems, including forest, coastal, and farmland ecosystems; 3) The impact and mechanism of microorganisms on the functions of farmland ecosystems.

Restoration ecology

Take forest, coastal and farmland ecosystems in tropical areas as research objects, adopt ecological principles and methods to control and repair polluted, degraded or damaged ecosystems, and research the restoration theories and techniques of damaged ecosystems, with focus on: 1) carrying out biomonitoring of the environmental quality of tropical islands, early warning of pollution, source analysis and ecological risk assessment; 2) the pollution process and ecological effects, and research on pollutant environmental behavior and its ecotoxicological effects; 3) taking ecological prevention and management as the main means, it focuses on pollution prevention, degradation and damaged habitat restoration techniques for coral reefs, seagrass beds, mangroves, farmland and wetlands.

Sustainable ecology

Ecological principles and methods are adopted to study the ecological security and coping strategies, ecological value assessment, ecological function excavation, and establishment of ecological civilization and culture in tropical zones, providing theoretical and data support for the establishment of scientific ecological replenishment mechanism and the establishment of indicator system of ecological civilization demonstration zones, etc. In the context of rapid development of science and technology, it changes the behavior mode of people, economic and social development mode on the basis of new energy sources and a more reasonable allocation of resources, to achieve the win-win goal of environmental protection and economic development, while reflecting the role of ecology in serving social development. Provide theoretical support and technical guarantee for the construction of Hainan Free Trade Port. Focus on: 1) research on the ecological protection and utilization of marine and land resources in tropical zones; 2) monitoring and comprehensive value assessment of protected ecosystems in tropical zones; 3) regeneration mechanism and sustainable utilization of renewable resources.

Training Objectives
