On July 14, 2018, HNU integrated its outstanding disciplines like ecology, crop science, and tourism management, as well as cooperated with the government, renowned universities, and scientific research institutions to form the Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park Research Institute to further explore the protection of the Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park, serving ecological civilization construction in Hainan.

Hainan gibbons are an indicator species of tropical rainforests and a star species in the Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park.

Since 2016, HNU has used artificial tracking, infrared cameras, drones, and other technologies to carry out research on the conservation of Hainan gibbons.

HNU has established the "Richard Leaver Academician Workstation", which is led by Professor Richard Leaver, a world-renowned artificial intelligence scientist, and composed of more than 10 experts in the fields of landscape design, intelligent interaction design, as well as simulation design, including Tan Xiaodong from the School of Art and Design of HNU. The workstation carries out the planning and design of key projects in the Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park.

From 2019 to 2020, Associate Professor Ren Hongtao of the HNU Law School participated in the drafting of the Regulations on National Park of Hainan Tropical Rainforest, which came into effect on Oct 1, 2020.

As a member of the legislative team, Ren also participated in the drafting of the "Resource Management and Control System of the Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park" from 2020 to 2021, which was implemented as an internal management document for the park.
