HNU poverty alleviation project cited by Ministry of Education

The efforts of Hainan University (HNU) to help lift Lemei village out of poverty by developing a characteristic orchid industry was selected by the Ministry of Education to be part of the third batch of exemplary provincial university targeted poverty alleviation projects.

Lemei used to be a deeply impoverished village that had 524 residents in 124 households, of which 80 percent of them lived under the poverty line. In 2018, HNU sent Wang Lianchun to the village to assist with its poverty alleviation efforts.

Under Wang's leadership, Lemei has begun to develop the collective economy of its orchid industry, which has borne fruitful achievements. To prolong the industrial chain and increase added value, Lemei also established an exhibition zone for orchid cultural products.

The average net income of local villagers has increased from 2,836 yuan ($421) in 2015 to 9,888 yuan by the end of 2019, lifting the entire village out of poverty.
