Over the past 10 years, Hainan University (HNU) has witnessed a rapid growth in its scientific strengths. Its scientific research expenditure rose 36 percent year-on-year from 2017 to 2018. Breakthroughs have been achieved in its establishment of projects with the National Natural Science Foundation of China, National Social Science Fund of China, and national key R&D plans.
In 2018, 86 HNU projects were approved by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and 24 projects were approved by the National Social Science Fund of China. The university took the lead or participated in multiple national key R&D plans. One of its projects became the first in Hainan province to receive the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, while its scientific research team was included in the 2018 Innovation Talent Promotion Plan of the Ministry of Science and Technology for the first time.
